Where I'd be more cautious is with the absolute bottom of the range, the sets that show up at eye-wateringly low prices with big screen sizes attached. That combination usually means an older or more basic panel stretched across more inches than it can comfortably handle. Big and cheap isn't the same as big and good.

TCL sits alongside Hisense as the main challenger to the established names, and the comparison is a fair one to make. Both are Chinese manufacturers using their own panel technology to compete on price. Neither has quite matched LG or Samsung on software polish, but both have closed the gap on picture quality far quicker than either of those brands would probably like to admit.
