Is CHiQ a good brand? The truth about those cheap fridge freezers
CHiQ fridge freezers keep popping up at silly low prices. I've looked into whether they're actually any good or just cheap for a reason.
If you've been browsing for a new fridge freezer lately, you've probably noticed CHiQ everywhere. They're the ones sitting at the top of the search results priced about two hundred quid less than the big names, and you're sat there wondering if that's a bargain or a trap.
I get asked this a lot, so let's actually get into it properly rather than just saying "yeah it's fine" and leaving you to find out the hard way.
Who actually makes CHiQ
CHiQ isn't some no-name brand knocked up in someone's garage. It's owned by Changhong, a massive Chinese electronics manufacturer that's been going since the 1950s and makes everything from TVs to air con units. CHiQ is their budget-friendly export brand, and it's sold across Europe, Australia and the UK.
So the backing is legit. This isn't a mystery brand that vanishes the moment something goes wrong. That said, being backed by a big manufacturer doesn't automatically mean every product is brilliant. It just means there's an actual company behind it if you need a warranty claim.
Why CHiQ fridge freezers are so cheap
A few honest reasons here, none of them sinister:
They manufacture at scale and skip a lot of the marketing spend that brands like Samsung or LG pour into. You're not paying for years of advertising campaigns baked into the price.
The build quality is simpler. Less premium finishes, more plastic where other brands might use metal, fewer bells and whistles like water dispensers or fancy touchscreens. Fine if you just want cold food, less fine if you wanted something that looks like it belongs in a show home.
They're also newer to the UK market, so they're pricing aggressively to build a customer base. That's a genuine strategy loads of brands use when they're trying to get a foothold, and it works out well for us as buyers.
What people actually say after buying one
The general pattern from reviews I've dug through is pretty consistent. People are happy with how quiet they run and how much they cooled for the price. Energy efficiency ratings are usually solid too, which matters given what electricity costs these days.
The complaints, where they exist, tend to be about the plastic shelving feeling a bit flimsy, and customer service response times not being as slick as the bigger brands. A few people have mentioned longer waits for replacement parts.
None of that screams avoid at all costs. It screams "you get what you pay for, but what you pay for still works."
Is CHiQ actually worth it
Honestly, yes, for most people. If you want a fridge freezer that does the job reliably and don't care about smart features or a showroom finish, CHiQ makes sense. You're getting decent cooling performance and reasonable energy ratings without paying for a badge.
Where I'd hesitate is if you're after something that'll last fifteen years without a hiccup, or you want proper premium build quality. In that case you're better off saving up for a more established brand, or at least waiting for one of the bigger names to come up in our home deals.
Worth checking the warranty terms too. Most CHiQ models come with a decent length warranty, but read what's actually covered before you buy, not after something breaks.
How to actually get a good price on one
The trick with any budget brand is not paying full price even when full price is already cheap. Retailers rotate these deals constantly, especially around bank holidays and end of season clearouts. CHiQ deals are commonly found on JoyBuy, which is the new international shopfront of JD one of the largest Chinese retailers. Read more about Joybuy here.
Worth setting up an alert in your deal alert settings so you get pinged the moment a decent CHiQ deal (or any fridge freezer deal, really) turns up rather than manually checking every day like a mug. That's basically why Rapid Savings exists. We had a go at this as a bog standard forum back in 2024 and it just wasn't built for actually catching deals fast. The relaunch in June 2026 fixed that properly.
The bottom line
CHiQ isn't a dodgy brand trying to catch you out. It's a legitimate manufacturer making decent budget appliances at a genuinely low price. You won't get the poshest features, but you'll get a fridge that keeps your food cold and doesn't cost a fortune doing it. For most kitchens, that's exactly what you need.
